Help with a drug bill and help with the Part B premium come from different programs. You may qualify for one, both or neither. The first step is checking the program rules against your actual income and resources.

Covered by Guzman can help clients review and apply for Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs. This service is separate from general Medicaid and Florida KidCare applications, which we refer to the official programs.

Extra Help (Part D Low-Income Subsidy)

Extra Help, also called the Part D Low-Income Subsidy, reduces qualifying prescription-plan expenses. Depending on your situation, it helps with premiums, deductibles and prescription cost sharing. It does not replace Medicare or pay every medical bill. Some beneficiaries qualify automatically through other assistance; others apply through Social Security. Check your notice before assuming you need another application.

Medicare Savings Programs: QMB, SLMB, QI

Florida runs the Medicare Savings Programs through DCF. QMB helps pay Medicare premiums plus Medicare deductibles, coinsurance and copays. SLMB and QI mainly pay the Part B premium, which is $202.90 a month in 2026 (CMS 2026 Medicare Parts A and B fact sheet). Providers are not allowed to bill QMB members for Medicare-covered deductibles, coinsurance or copays. If you get a bill like that, show your QMB information and contact Medicare or the state for help.

Who qualifies in Florida (income and assets)

Each program has its own income and resource test. A bank balance, retirement income and household situation can count differently than they do on a Marketplace application, and not every asset or payment is counted. These are the 2026 limits; we update this page when the new figures are published. Do not rule yourself out because an old chart or a friend’s result looks different.

Extra Help, 2026

Extra Help (2026)One personMarried couple
Yearly income below$23,940$32,460
Resources below$18,090$36,100

Source: Medicare.gov: help with drug costs. The income limit is 150% of the federal poverty level.

Medicare Savings Programs in Florida, January 2026

ProgramWhat it helps payMonthly income, one personMonthly income, coupleResources, one personResources, couple
QMBPart B premium, plus Medicare deductibles and copays$1,350$1,824$9,950$14,910
SLMBPart B premium$1,616$2,184$9,950$14,910
QIPart B premium$1,816$2,455$9,950$14,910

These income limits include the standard $20 monthly income exclusion, as shown in the Social Security program manual (2026 Medicare Savings Program limits). Florida DCF’s own chart (DCF Appendix A-9.1, effective January 2026) lists the same limits before that $20 exclusion: $1,330, $1,596 and $1,796 for one person, and $1,804, $2,164 and $2,435 for a couple. Florida uses the same asset limits as the federal chart. The state decides who qualifies.

Dual eligible (Medicare + Medicaid) and D-SNP plans

Having Medicare and Medicaid is called dual eligibility. A D-SNP is a Medicare Advantage plan designed for people with qualifying dual eligibility; it is not the same thing as Extra Help. Check whether the plan accepts your Medicaid category and how it coordinates care. A larger advertised allowance does not establish eligibility or prove that your doctors participate.

How to apply

You apply for Extra Help through Social Security. You apply for a Medicare Savings Program through Florida DCF’s benefits system. Gather benefit letters, proof of income, bank and resource records and your Medicare card. Keep the confirmation after you submit, and answer any request by the deadline on the notice. Applying for help does not change your current health or drug plan by itself.

We help you check eligibility

Contact us with your notices and your current coverage. We can help you see which application fits the cost you want to lower and get the information together. The program decides who qualifies. If you are approved, we review how the approval changes your premium, your pharmacy bills and any chance to change plans before you choose a different one.

Official resources: Social Security: apply for Extra Help; Medicare.gov: Medicare Savings Programs; Florida DCF: Medicaid; Medicare.gov: Special Enrollment Periods.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. For information on all of your options, please contact Medicare.gov, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifies you for Medicare Extra Help?

You need Medicare plus limited income and resources. For 2026 that means yearly income below $23,940 for one person or $32,460 for a married couple, and resources below $18,090 or $36,100. Some people get Extra Help automatically through other help programs.

What is the income limit for Extra Help?

For 2026, the Extra Help income limit is $23,940 a year for one person and $32,460 for a married couple, which is 150% of the federal poverty level. Resources must also be under $18,090 or $36,100, and some income and resources are not counted.

What is the income limit for the Medicare Savings Program in Florida?

It depends on the program. For 2026, the monthly income limits for one person are $1,350 for QMB, $1,616 for SLMB and $1,816 for QI ($1,824, $2,184 and $2,455 for a couple), counting the $20 income exclusion, with resources up to $9,950 ($14,910 for a couple).

Can Medicaid pay my Medicare premium?

Yes. If you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program through Florida, the state can pay your Part B premium, and QMB also helps with Medicare deductibles and copays.

What is a D-SNP?

A D-SNP is a Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan for people who have both Medicare and a qualifying Medicaid category. Which plans are available, and which Medicaid categories they accept, varies.

Can I change plans more often with Extra Help?

Possibly, but only for standalone drug plans. With Extra Help there may be a monthly chance to join or switch a standalone Part D plan; it is not a monthly pass to switch among Advantage plans. Check the current rule on Medicare.gov before you change.
