Serving the people of Sun City Center

Del Webb opened Sun City Center at the end of 1961 as Florida’s first planned retirement community for active seniors. Today many of the work vehicles on its streets belong to businesses that serve those residents: home care agencies, medical transport vans, lawn and HVAC crews, handymen and golf cart shops. A lot of those vehicles carry people, not just tools, and that changes the insurance.

Short trips on S.R. 674

Most trips here are short: from a home to a clinic, a pharmacy or a shop along S.R. 674, then back. Drivers share the streets with golf carts and people out walking, and carts cross S.R. 674 at marked crossings. Longer runs head out to I-75 or U.S. 301.

When we quote, we ask who drives, whether passengers ride along, where vehicles park at night and how far they usually go. Common local operations include home care transportation, HVAC, handyman services and landscaping.

Limits when you carry clients

One crash with three clients in the van can mean three injury claims at once. A limit that seems fine for a pickup can run out fast when passengers ride along, so many transport businesses choose higher liability limits or add an umbrella policy. Agencies, facilities and associations may also set a minimum limit in their contracts. Match the highest one you sign.

What insurers ask about passenger vans

Before they quote a van that carries clients, insurance companies usually want to know:

  • How many seats the van has and how many riders it usually carries
  • Whether riders use wheelchairs, and how they are loaded and secured
  • Whether clients pay for rides or rides are part of another service
  • Each driver’s age, license and driving record
  • How far you go, such as local appointments or trips to Tampa

Regular passenger service may need a passenger van policy rather than a standard business auto policy.

Caregivers who drive their own cars

Home care aides often drive clients in their own cars. The aide’s personal policy usually pays first, and many personal policies limit business use. If a claim goes beyond that, the business can be sued too. Hired and non-owned auto coverage is built to help protect the business in that case.

Golf carts are part of the traffic

Golf carts are allowed on public streets inside Sun City Center, but not along S.R. 674 or U.S. 301. They may cross S.R. 674 only at four marked crossings, and only between sunrise and sunset. The community’s own golf cart guide recommends liability insurance for carts. Businesses that sell, repair or deliver carts should review garage and dealer coverage; see golf cart and LSV dealers.

Weight rules and bigger vehicles

Florida sets higher liability minimums for heavier commercial vehicles. Under Florida Statutes s. 627.7415, a vehicle of 26,000 to under 35,000 pounds gross vehicle weight needs at least $50,000 of liability coverage, 35,000 to under 44,000 pounds needs at least $100,000, and 44,000 pounds and up needs at least $300,000 (bodily injury and property damage combined, per accident). Most vans and pickups here weigh far less, so your contracts usually matter more than this law. If you run a larger bus, tell us the seat count so we can check the rules for that vehicle.

Serving Sun City Center and nearby communities

We also help businesses in Ruskin, Apollo Beach, Wimauma and Riverview. Our office is in Wesley Chapel, in the Tampa Bay area, and we work with clients across Florida by phone, text and video. Call or text 813-302-7151 to get started.

What businesses in Hillsborough County pay for insurance

These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for businesses across Hillsborough County, which includes Sun City Center. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code.

  • General liability$300 to $6,000 / yearAbout $25 to $500 a month.
  • Commercial auto, whole policy$1,000 to $42,000 / yearAbout $80 to $3,500 a month.
  • Workers' compensation$600 to $6,500 / yearAbout $50 to $550 a month.
  • Business owner's policy$400 to $16,000 / yearAbout $30 to $1,350 a month.
  • Commercial property$700 to $8,000 / yearAbout $55 to $670 a month.
  • Professional liability$200 to $2,500 / yearAbout $15 to $210 a month.

For ranges by coverage, vehicle and business type, see our Florida commercial insurance cost guide. For your real number, call or text 813-302-7151. Commercial property and business owner's policies in Florida usually carry a separate hurricane deductible that is not reflected in these prices.

Is my employee’s personal car covered when driving clients?

The employee’s own policy usually pays first, but many personal policies limit business use. Hired and non-owned auto coverage can help protect your business if a claim goes beyond that. Ask each driver for a copy of their policy so you know what they carry.

Are golf carts covered by commercial auto?

Not automatically. A golf cart or low-speed vehicle may need to be listed on the policy or insured separately, depending on how it is registered and used. Sun City Center’s own golf cart guide recommends liability insurance for carts.

What liability limit should a medical transport van carry?

There is no single right number, so start with the most riders you carry at once. One crash can injure several passengers, and each one may file a claim. Contracts with agencies or facilities often set a minimum, and many owners add an umbrella policy on top.

Do I need a special policy to drive clients to appointments?

If driving clients is a regular part of your service, usually yes. The insurance company needs to know passengers ride along, and some companies write passenger transport only on a separate policy. Telling them up front helps avoid a claim problem later.

Does a wheelchair lift change my quote?

It can. Insurance companies ask how riders are loaded and secured, and the lift itself may need to be listed on the policy as added equipment. Include it in the vehicle details you send us.
