Commercial auto for Lakeland businesses
Lakeland sits on I-4 between Tampa and Orlando, and a lot of local work lives on that road. Publix has its headquarters here. Amazon Air opened a cargo hub at Lakeland Linder International Airport in 2020. The Lakeland Economic Development Council counts more than 28 million square feet of industrial and warehouse space in the city. All of that means box trucks, cargo vans and pickups moving freight, parts and crews every day. For an insurer, it adds up to more miles, more stops and more drivers to price.
We are an independent agency based in Wesley Chapel. We quote Lakeland businesses with several carriers, explain the differences in plain words, and help you choose a policy that matches how your vehicles are really used.
Routes, radius and the Polk Parkway
A normal Lakeland day might start at a warehouse off I-4, run the Polk Parkway toll loop around the south side of town, and end with stops along U.S. 98. Carriers price that pattern, so they will ask:
- How far your vehicles usually go from where they park at night
- How often they leave Polk County, for example to Tampa, Orlando or Plant City
- Whether you haul goods for other companies or only your own tools and stock
- How many stops a driver makes on a normal day
Hauling for someone else is rated differently from carrying your own equipment. If you do both, tell us up front so the quote matches the work.
Box trucks, cargo vans and leases
Most Lakeland quotes we run involve a box truck or a cargo van. For each vehicle we need the VIN, the gross vehicle weight rating, who owns or leases it, and the address where it parks overnight. A 26-foot box truck and a small van are very different risks, even when they do the same job. Tell us about any liftgate, racks or refrigeration unit too, because added equipment changes the value the carrier insures.
If you lease or finance a truck, read the agreement. Many leases require a set liability limit and physical damage coverage, and some want the leasing company listed on the policy. Send us that page with your quote request so nothing gets missed.
Drivers move the price
Warehouse and delivery businesses often hire quickly and see drivers come and go. Each driver may need carrier approval before getting behind the wheel. Send the full name, date of birth and license number for every driver, including part-time and seasonal help. A driver with recent tickets or accidents can raise the price for the whole policy, or the carrier may refuse to insure that driver. Tell us too if any vehicle goes home with a driver at night.
A simple rule helps: nobody drives a company vehicle until we have added them and the carrier has accepted them. It takes a call or a text to us, and it avoids an ugly surprise after a claim.
Freight and tools need their own coverage
Commercial auto pays for injuries and damage you cause to others with the vehicle and, if you buy it, damage to the vehicle itself. The freight in the back or the tools on the shelves usually need separate coverage, such as motor truck cargo or inland marine. Our page on auto versus cargo coverage walks through the difference. If you haul customer goods out of a Lakeland warehouse, ask the shipper what cargo limit they require before we quote.
The same goes for trailers. A trailer you pull should be listed on the policy, and one you borrow or rent may need its own endorsement. Ask us before you hook up.
Contracts and certificates
Distribution centers, general contractors and property managers often want a certificate of insurance before your truck pulls onto their property. Some ask for more: a higher limit, their company named as additional insured, or a waiver of subrogation. A certificate can only show coverage that is already on the policy.
Send us the insurance section of the contract before you sign. We check what the carrier can add and what it may cost. Our guide to certificates and contract requirements explains the most common requests.
Picking a liability limit
The minimum limit is only a starting point for a business that runs trucks on I-4 every day. A serious crash with a loaded box truck can cost more than a small policy pays, and the business may owe the rest. Some shippers and general contractors ask for a one million dollar limit before they hand you work. We can quote two or three limits side by side so you can see what each step up really costs.
If employees run errands in their own cars, or you rent a truck during a busy season, ask about hired and non-owned auto coverage. It fills a gap that a policy listing only your own vehicles can leave open.
Serving Lakeland and nearby communities
We work with businesses all over Lakeland, from the warehouses near I-4 to service companies on the south side, and with neighbors in Auburndale, Plant City, Mulberry and Winter Haven.
To get started, send us your vehicle list with VINs, your drivers, where the vehicles park, your usual routes and any contract insurance pages. If you add rented trucks or temporary drivers in busy months, tell us before the first one hits the road. Call or text 813-302-7151 and we will take it from there.
What businesses in Polk County pay for insurance
These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for businesses across Polk County, which includes Lakeland. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code. We don’t have enough local commercial auto quotes to publish a county range yet, so use the per-vehicle ranges in our cost guide.
- General liability$600 to $3,500 / yearAbout $50 to $300 a month.
- Workers' compensation$1,500 to $8,000 / yearAbout $120 to $670 a month.

Do I need a commercial policy to deliver for another company?
In most cases, yes. Personal auto policies usually exclude or limit driving for pay, and the company you deliver for may set its own insurance requirements. Send us the contract and we will quote a policy that fits it.
My box truck is leased. Who insures it?
It depends on the lease. Some leases include insurance from the leasing company, but many require you to buy liability and physical damage and list the leasing company on your policy. Send us the insurance page of the lease and we will match it.
Can I add a new driver the same day?
Often, yes, if we have the driver’s full name, date of birth and license number. The carrier checks the driving record and may accept, surcharge or decline the driver. Until the carrier accepts them, keep that driver out of your vehicles.
Does commercial auto cover the freight in my truck?
Usually not. Freight and customer goods are normally covered by a separate motor truck cargo policy or endorsement. Ask your shipper what cargo limit they require and we will quote it along with the auto policy.
My trucks run to Tampa and Orlando every week. Does that change the quote?
It can. Carriers look at how far your vehicles travel from where they park at night, so a truck that runs I-4 to both cities may price differently from one that stays in Lakeland. Give us your real radius so the policy matches the work.
