Commercial auto for Winter Haven businesses
Winter Haven calls itself the Chain of Lakes City, with about 50 lakes inside its borders. It is also a freight town. The CSX Central Florida intermodal terminal, just off State Road 60, moves shipping containers between rail and truck for Tampa, Orlando and South Florida. Add LEGOLAND Florida on the old Cypress Gardens site, and you get haulers, hospitality vendors and home service crews sharing the same roads.
We are an independent agency based in Wesley Chapel. We quote Winter Haven businesses with several carriers and help you pick coverage that fits the work your vehicles do.
Know which kind of driving you do
Carriers sort Winter Haven accounts into very different groups, and the price follows the group. Tell us which of these fit you:
- Hauling containers or freight for other companies, often called for-hire trucking
- Delivering your own products to customers, such as supplies, food or equipment
- Service work, where the vehicle carries a crew and tools to a job
- Vendor runs to hotels, attractions and event sites
Many businesses do more than one. A landscaper who also hauls mulch for pay for a neighbor may be treated as hauling for hire. Give us the whole picture so the policy does not leave out the work that pays the bills.
Container and freight trucks
If you pull containers or run freight around the intermodal terminal, expect a closer look from underwriters. They ask about the tractor and trailer, who owns the trailer or chassis, each driver’s commercial license and experience, and how far each load goes. Hauling for others is specialty trucking insurance, and carriers write it very differently from a contractor’s pickup policy.
If you are leased onto another motor carrier instead of running on your own, tell us. That changes which policy pays for what, and some owner operators end up with a gap between the two. Send us your loss runs from the last three to five years, your driver list and your agreements with brokers or shippers. Those papers decide which carriers will quote, so having them ready saves days.
Hospitality and attraction vendors
Tourism supports a lot of small businesses: linen and cleaning services, food and drink suppliers, event rental companies, shuttle vans and maintenance crews. Each one drives differently. A catering van making deliveries carries different risks than a van full of guests.
If you carry people, tell us how many seats the van has and whether riders pay. Carrying passengers changes which carriers can write the policy. Our page on passenger van and shuttle insurance explains what underwriters look for.
Vendor vans often sit at a loading dock or in a service lot for hours. Tell us where they park during the day and at night, and whether employees ever take them home.
Lakefront work and trailers
With a chain of lakes running through town, many local crews work on waterfront property: docks, seawalls, pools, lawns and boat lifts. That work often means a pickup pulling a trailer full of equipment. The pickup, the trailer and the equipment on it are three separate things to insure. List the trailer on the auto policy, and ask about inland marine for the mowers, pumps and hand tools.
A trailer you rent or borrow may need its own endorsement. Tell us before you hook it up, not after a problem on U.S. 17. And think about storm season: if trucks and trailers sit near the water during a hurricane, comprehensive coverage is the part of an auto policy that may respond to flood or wind damage, depending on the policy.
Contracts before the first job
Hotels, resorts, property managers and general contractors usually ask for a certificate of insurance before you start. Some contracts ask for a specific limit, additional insured wording or a waiver of subrogation. Those extras depend on what the carrier agrees to add, and some carry a cost.
Send us the insurance page of the contract early. A certificate can only show coverage that is actually on the policy, so we want to fix any gaps before the job starts. Keep a folder with each customer’s insurance requirements, and we will send updated certificates when your policy renews.
Limits and deductibles
Choose limits based on what you could lose, not only on the lowest legal amount. A crash on Cypress Gardens Boulevard involving a loaded trailer can hurt several people and damage several cars. We quote two or three limit options side by side so you can see what each step up costs.
For deductibles, look at your cash on hand. A higher deductible lowers the price, but you pay that amount first when your own truck is damaged. We show you both numbers so the choice is yours.
If employees use their own cars for business errands, like a supply run or a bank deposit, ask about hired and non-owned auto coverage too.
Serving Winter Haven and nearby communities
We work with businesses across Winter Haven, along U.S. 17, Cypress Gardens Boulevard and State Road 60, and with neighbors in Auburndale, Haines City, Bartow, Lake Alfred and Lakeland.
To start a quote, send us your vehicles with VINs, your drivers with license numbers, where the vehicles park at night, your usual routes and any contract insurance pages. If you are adding a truck or a driver soon, tell us that too. Call or text 813-302-7151.
What businesses in Polk County pay for insurance
These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for businesses across Polk County, which includes Winter Haven. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code. We don’t have enough local commercial auto quotes to publish a county range yet, so use the per-vehicle ranges in our cost guide.
- General liability$600 to $3,500 / yearAbout $50 to $300 a month.
- Workers' compensation$1,500 to $8,000 / yearAbout $120 to $670 a month.

I haul containers from the intermodal terminal. Can you quote that?
We can look at it. Container hauling for others is specialty trucking, so carriers want your driver list, loss runs, equipment details and the agreements you work under. The insurer decides eligibility and price after underwriting.
Do I need commercial auto for vendor deliveries to hotels and attractions?
If the business owns the vehicle or uses it mainly for deliveries, a commercial policy is usually the right fit. Personal policies often limit business use. The hotel or venue may also ask for its own limits on a certificate.
Does my auto policy cover the mower on my trailer?
Usually not. The auto policy is for the vehicles. Mowers, pumps and tools usually need inland marine or another equipment form, while the trailer itself should be listed on the auto policy.
Can I carry guests in a passenger van on a regular commercial auto policy?
It depends on the number of seats, whether riders pay and the carrier. Passenger transport gets careful underwriting and some carriers do not write it at all. Tell us exactly how the van is used and we will look for the carriers that do.
I also work in Lakeland and Haines City. Is that a problem?
No. Most local policies expect travel across Polk County. What matters is your usual radius and any regular longer trips, so tell us about those when we quote.
