Commercial auto for Bartow businesses
Bartow is the county seat of Polk County and the old center of Florida’s phosphate country. The county courthouse and many government offices are here, and Mosaic, the phosphate company, is one of the biggest employers in the area. Put those together and a lot of Bartow’s business driving is heavy: dump trucks, lowboys, service trucks and crew pickups running U.S. 17, U.S. 98 and State Road 60 to mine sites, job sites and public projects.
We are an independent agency based in Wesley Chapel. We quote Bartow businesses with several carriers and help you set up a policy built for heavy work.
Site work, mining support and hauling
Many Bartow businesses work around mining and land development: hauling fill, sand and rock, moving equipment, maintaining roads, clearing land and repairing machinery. Carriers look at this work closely because the trucks are heavy and the roads are shared with everyone else. Be clear about:
- What you haul and who owns the load
- Whether you haul for others for pay or only for your own jobs
- How many loads a day and how far each one goes
- Whether your trucks go onto mine property or active job sites
The answers decide which carriers will quote and how the policy is built. Hauling for others, even now and then, is usually rated very differently from moving dirt for your own jobs.
Dump trucks, lowboys and service trucks
For each unit, send the VIN, year, gross vehicle weight, value and who holds the title. List every trailer, including lowboys and equipment trailers, with its own VIN. Dump truck insurance is priced differently from a pickup policy, and a truck that pulls a loaded lowboy is rated on the combination. If a truck is new to you, send the bill of sale too, since carriers often ask for it when the value is high.
Service trucks with cranes, compressors or welders mounted on them need that equipment described too. Mounted equipment may be covered as part of the truck or may need a separate form, depending on the carrier.
Heavy trucks and Florida law
Weight changes the legal minimum. Under Florida Statutes s. 627.7415, a commercial motor vehicle needs at least $50,000 per occurrence in combined liability when its gross vehicle weight is 26,000 pounds or more but less than 35,000 pounds, $100,000 from 35,000 to under 44,000 pounds, and $300,000 at 44,000 pounds or more. Trucks that fall under federal motor carrier rules must carry the federal minimum amounts instead.
Those numbers are only floors. A loaded dump truck can cause far more damage than that in one crash, and contracts often ask for higher limits. We quote a few options side by side so you can see the cost of each step.
Experienced drivers matter most
Heavy truck carriers pay close attention to drivers. Expect questions about years driving the same kind of truck, commercial license class, and any accidents or violations in the last three to five years. A driver who is new to dump trucks may be hard to place, even with a clean record. Send the name, date of birth and license number for everyone who might drive, and tell us before you add anyone new.
Some carriers also ask about safety habits, like pre-trip inspections, dash cameras or a written rule on phone use. If you have them, tell us. And if a driver has a crash or a ticket during the policy year, let us know. It is better to plan for the renewal than to be surprised by it.
Public jobs and site rules
As the county seat, Bartow sees plenty of public work, and government owners and large site operators tend to have detailed insurance requirements. Expect requests for specific limits, additional insured status, a waiver of subrogation and a certificate before your trucks roll onto the site. Some also want proof of general liability and workers’ compensation along with the auto.
Send us the bid package or the contract’s insurance section early, ideally before you bid, so the price you give the owner includes the insurance the job really requires. Owners may also check that your policy stays active for the whole job, so tell us right away if you get a cancellation or late payment notice. Our guide to certificates and contract requirements covers the usual wording.
Your trucks and the equipment you haul
The auto policy pays for damage you cause to others. Damage to your own trucks needs physical damage coverage, and heavy trucks are expensive to repair or replace, so give us an accurate value for each one. Keep receipts for major repairs and upgrades, since they help support the value you list.
The machine on your lowboy, like an excavator or a loader, is usually covered under an inland marine or contractor’s equipment policy, not the auto policy. If you haul someone else’s machine for pay, ask whether you need cargo coverage for it too.
Serving Bartow and nearby communities
We work with businesses in Bartow and nearby Mulberry, Fort Meade, Lakeland and Winter Haven, from yards along U.S. 17 and State Road 60 to shops near downtown and the airport industrial park.
To start a quote, send your vehicle and trailer list with VINs and values, your drivers, your loss runs, what you haul and any contract insurance requirements. If you are bidding on a job that needs more trucks than you run today, call before you bid. We can price the added units ahead of time so your numbers hold up. Call or text 813-302-7151.
What businesses in Polk County pay for insurance
These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for businesses across Polk County, which includes Bartow. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code. We don’t have enough local commercial auto quotes to publish a county range yet, so use the per-vehicle ranges in our cost guide.
- General liability$600 to $3,500 / yearAbout $50 to $300 a month.
- Workers' compensation$1,500 to $8,000 / yearAbout $120 to $670 a month.

What liability limit does my dump truck need in Florida?
It depends on the truck’s gross vehicle weight and whether it falls under federal rules. Florida Statutes s. 627.7415 sets minimums of $50,000, $100,000 or $300,000 per occurrence by weight class, and contracts often require more. Send us the truck’s weight and your contract and we will match the limit.
Does my auto policy cover the excavator on my lowboy?
Usually not. The excavator is normally covered by an inland marine or contractor’s equipment policy. The auto policy covers the truck, the trailer and your liability while driving.
Can a driver with little dump truck experience be insured?
Some carriers accept newer drivers and others do not, and the price may be higher. It depends on the whole account. Send us the driver’s details and we will see which carriers will consider them.
A county contract wants to be additional insured. Is that possible on auto?
Many carriers can add additional insured status to the auto policy by endorsement. The wording must match what the carrier offers, so send us the contract before you sign.
I haul rock and fill for other contractors. Is that different from hauling for my own jobs?
Yes. Hauling for others for pay is usually rated as for-hire trucking, with different underwriting. Tell us about all the hauling you do so the policy matches it.
