Tomato fields, fish farms and new rooftops

Ruskin has grown tomatoes for generations, and the town still holds its Tomato Festival every spring. Today the old fields share U.S. 41 with new subdivisions, and the trucks on the road carry everything from produce and live fish to roofing crews and pool techs. We help Ruskin owners insure the vehicles that keep all of that moving.

U.S. 41, College Avenue and I-75

Local work in Ruskin moves along U.S. 41, College Avenue (S.R. 674) and Shell Point Road. Longer runs go north on I-75 or U.S. 41 toward Tampa, or south across the Little Manatee River toward Bradenton. College Avenue meets I-75 at Exit 240 on the east side of town, which is also the way to Sun City Center.

When we quote, we ask about your normal radius, where each vehicle parks at night and whether anyone drives it home after hours. Growers and haulers should also tell us about their busy months and any farm roads they use.

Tropical fish and other live loads

The Tampa Bay area is the center of Florida’s tropical fish farming industry, and the University of Florida runs its Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory right here in Ruskin. If your farm moves fish or plants in pickups, vans or box trucks, tell us what you carry and where it goes. The auto policy covers the vehicle and your liability on the road. The fish or plants on board usually need separate cargo or inland marine coverage.

Pickups, trailers and farm vehicles

Ruskin fleets often mix pickups, utility and equipment trailers, box trucks and vehicles registered to a farm or to the owner personally. Tell us who holds each title and registration, because a truck titled to you personally but used for the business can leave a gap in coverage.

Building the new Ruskin

Much of the land that once grew tomatoes is now new homes, so a lot of Ruskin trucks belong to builders, framers, roofers, electricians and lawn crews. Builders often want proof of insurance, their name added to your policy and higher limits before the first invoice. Send us the contract early so we can check what your policy can do before you sign. Our guide to certificates and contract requirements explains the usual wording.

Seasonal help behind the wheel

Farm and landscape work in Ruskin comes in waves, and busy months often bring extra drivers. Add every driver to the policy before they drive, not after. Insurance companies check each driver’s record, and a driver who isn’t listed can cause trouble with a claim. Our guide to driver record reviews explains what they look for.

Heavy farm and haul trucks

Produce trucks, dump trucks and larger box trucks can fall under Florida Statutes s. 627.7415. That law sets minimum liability of at least $50,000 for commercial vehicles of 26,000 to under 35,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, $100,000 for 35,000 to under 44,000 pounds, and $300,000 for 44,000 pounds and up, for bodily injury and property damage combined per accident. Farm plates and trips out of state can bring other rules, so tell us exactly how each truck is registered and used.

Serving Ruskin and nearby communities

We also help businesses in Apollo Beach to the north, Sun City Center to the east, and Gibsonton, Wimauma and Riverview. Our office is in Wesley Chapel, and we work with clients across Florida by phone, text and video. Call or text 813-302-7151 with your vehicle list, your drivers and the jobs or crops that keep you busy.

What businesses in Ruskin pay for insurance

These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for Ruskin businesses and, where noted, for businesses across Hillsborough County. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code.

  • General liability$500 to $7,500 / yearAbout $40 to $630 a month.
  • Commercial auto, whole policy (Hillsborough County)$1,000 to $42,000 / yearAbout $80 to $3,500 a month.
  • Workers' compensation (Hillsborough County)$600 to $6,500 / yearAbout $50 to $550 a month.
  • Business owner's policy (Hillsborough County)$400 to $16,000 / yearAbout $30 to $1,350 a month.
  • Commercial property (Hillsborough County)$700 to $8,000 / yearAbout $55 to $670 a month.
  • Professional liability (Hillsborough County)$200 to $2,500 / yearAbout $15 to $210 a month.

For ranges by coverage, vehicle and business type, see our Florida commercial insurance cost guide. For your real number, call or text 813-302-7151. Commercial property and business owner's policies in Florida usually carry a separate hurricane deductible that is not reflected in these prices.

Are farm trucks covered under a commercial auto policy?

It depends on how the truck is registered and used. Some farm vehicles go on a farm policy and others on commercial auto, and hauling for other growers for pay can change how the truck is rated. Tell us the real use so it is placed correctly.

Does my auto policy cover the fish or plants I haul?

Usually not. The auto policy pays for damage you cause to others and, if you buy it, damage to your truck. Live product on board usually needs separate cargo or inland marine coverage.

Do I need coverage for a trailer I pull behind my truck?

Yes, it should be listed. Liability while towing usually follows the truck, but damage to the trailer and to what is on it needs its own coverage on the policy. Ask us how each trailer is listed.

I hire extra drivers in the busy season. Do they need to be on the policy?

Yes. Add each driver before they get behind the wheel. The insurance company reviews their driving record and may turn some drivers down, so send names early.

A builder wants to be additional insured on my policy. Is that normal?

Yes, it is common on new home jobs. It is usually done with an endorsement, which some insurance companies include for written contracts and others charge for. Send us the contract wording and we will tell you what your policy allows.
