Valrico’s home-improvement trades

Valrico is mostly neighborhoods, spread along State Road 60 about 14 miles east of Tampa. The name means rich valley in Spanish, and the area grew from cotton and citrus into a commuter community. All those homes keep home-improvement trades busy: painters, fence installers, pool techs, flooring crews and handymen who spend the day driving from one subdivision to the next.

We are an independent agency based in Wesley Chapel. We compare commercial auto from several carriers for Valrico businesses and explain each option in plain words, including what a policy does not cover. Many of these businesses are small, often an owner and a crew or two, so every dollar of premium counts.

Getting around east Hillsborough

SR 60 is the main road west to Brandon and I-75, and east toward Plant City. Lithia Pinecrest Road heads south toward Lithia. A painter based here might work Brandon on Monday, FishHawk on Tuesday and Riverview by Friday.

Carriers ask for your normal radius and your farthest trip. For most Valrico trades the radius stays fairly local, which can work in your favor, as long as it matches what your drivers really do. If you start taking jobs in Pinellas or Pasco, tell us at renewal.

Painters, ladders and loaded vans

A painting company’s van usually carries ladders on a rack, paint, sprayers and drop cloths. The van is on the auto policy. The sprayers and ladders are not, unless you add inland marine or equipment coverage.

If a ladder comes loose on SR 60 and damages another car, the auto liability coverage is typically where that claim goes. Strap loads every time, and check racks and ties as part of your weekly routine.

Fence and flooring crews have the same issue with long materials. Rolls, posts and panels should be secured, and trailers loaded so the weight sits over the axle.

One vehicle or a small fleet

Many Valrico businesses start with a single pickup or van. If that vehicle is titled to the business or used mainly for work, that can be reason enough to look at a commercial policy, since a personal policy may not respond to a work accident.

As you grow to two, three or five vehicles, some carriers offer small fleet programs, and it may make sense to put everything on one policy with one renewal date. Adding vehicles and drivers mid-term is normal. Just call before a new truck goes to work, not after.

Before you buy a used truck, send us the VIN. We can give you an idea of how it changes your premium, so there are no surprises after the purchase.

Where the vehicles park

Many Valrico work vehicles park in a home driveway. Give us the exact address for each one. If a truck parks at an employee’s home or at a storage lot, list that address instead. Carriers rate by the overnight location and may ask whether it is gated, in a garage or on the street.

HOA rules sometimes limit where work trucks can park. If a driver moves the truck to another spot because of that, let us know so the policy stays accurate. It takes a minute to update and saves a headache later.

Theft is part of the picture too. Vans with ladder racks and tool boxes are easy to spot, so good lighting, locks and a driveway camera help keep tools and vehicles where you left them.

When the Alafia floods

After Hurricane Milton in October 2024, the Alafia River reached its highest level recorded at Lithia since 1933, and parts of Valrico flooded as the river rose. Trucks and trailers parked in low spots are exposed when that happens.

Flood damage to a vehicle is usually covered only if that vehicle carries comprehensive coverage, and subject to the deductible. Before storm season, check which of your vehicles carry it. Many carriers pause new coverage and changes when a storm is approaching, so waiting until the forecast turns can be too late.

It also helps to have a plan for where the trucks will ride out a storm, on higher ground away from the river.

Contracts and certificates

Builders, HOAs and commercial customers may ask for a certificate of insurance, a specific liability limit or additional insured status before you start. Send us the request before you sign. We will check it against your policy and tell you what can be added and what it may cost.

See our certificate guide for the common requests. And if you use subcontractors, ask them for their own certificates, so their accidents stay on their policy.

Some commercial customers also ask for a copy of the endorsement itself, not just the certificate. We can send that once the carrier issues it.

Serving Valrico and nearby communities

We work with trades and service businesses in Valrico and nearby Brandon, Seffner, Plant City and Riverview, plus FishHawk and Lithia.

What to send us: the business name and trade, each driver’s name, date of birth and license number, VINs for vehicles and trailers, overnight parking addresses, your usual work area, and any customer insurance requirements. The insurer decides eligibility and price after underwriting, and we will walk you through the quotes side by side. If you are missing a detail, send what you have and we will fill in the rest together.

What businesses in Hillsborough County pay for insurance

These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for businesses across Hillsborough County, which includes Valrico. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Your price can land outside them, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code.

  • General liability$300 to $6,000 / yearAbout $25 to $500 a month.
  • Commercial auto, whole policy$1,000 to $42,000 / yearAbout $80 to $3,500 a month.
  • Workers' compensation$600 to $6,500 / yearAbout $50 to $550 a month.
  • Business owner's policy$400 to $16,000 / yearAbout $30 to $1,350 a month.
  • Commercial property$700 to $8,000 / yearAbout $55 to $670 a month.
  • Professional liability$200 to $2,500 / yearAbout $15 to $210 a month.

For ranges by coverage, vehicle and business type, see our Florida commercial insurance cost guide. For your real number, call or text 813-302-7151. Commercial property and business owner's policies in Florida usually carry a separate hurricane deductible that is not reflected in these prices.

Are my ladders and sprayers covered if my van is broken into?

Usually not by commercial auto. Tools and equipment generally need inland marine or contractor’s equipment coverage. We can quote it together with the auto policy.

I only have one work van. Do I need a commercial policy?

It depends on how the van is titled and used. If it is owned by the business or used mostly for work, a personal policy may not respond to a work accident. We will compare both with you.

Will my vehicles be covered if the Alafia floods again?

Only vehicles with comprehensive coverage, and subject to the deductible and policy terms. Liability-only vehicles typically have no coverage for their own flood damage. Check before storm season.

My HOA does not allow work trucks in driveways. Where do I list the truck?

List the place where it actually parks overnight. If that changes, tell us so the policy stays accurate.
