A life change can open a chance to enroll in Marketplace health insurance outside Open Enrollment. This is called a Special Enrollment Period. Whether you qualify depends on what happened, when it happened, what coverage you had and what proof you have. In most cases you have 60 days, so the date matters.

Common life events and how long you have

The general rule on HealthCare.gov: Special Enrollment Period is that you usually have 60 days before or 60 days after the event to enroll.

Life eventHow long you have to enrollGood to know
Losing job-based or other qualifying coverage60 days before or 60 days after the coverage endsEnrolling before the old plan ends is the easiest way to avoid a gap.
Losing Medicaid or CHIP90 days after the coverage endsKeep the notice that shows the end date.
COBRA running out60 days after it endsThis applies when COBRA reaches its end date.
Getting married60 days after the weddingPick a plan by the last day of the month and coverage can start the first day of the next month.
Having a baby or adopting a child60 days after the birth or adoptionCoverage can start the day of the event, even if you enroll up to 60 days later.
Moving to a new ZIP code or county, or to the U.S. from abroad or a U.S. territory60 days after the moveFor many moves you must have had qualifying coverage before moving.
Your employer offers an ICHRA or QSEHRAOffer starting in the past 60 days or the next 60 daysLets you enroll in or change a Marketplace plan.

Getting sick, wanting a different doctor or deciding the premium is too high does not open a Special Enrollment Period by itself. Some events, such as many moves and marriage, also require that you had qualifying coverage before the event, with some exceptions.

Lost job coverage or Medicaid

Employer coverage ending can qualify even when COBRA is offered. You can enroll up to 60 days before the plan ends, which is the easiest way to avoid a gap, or within 60 days after. If you took COBRA and it runs out, you have 60 days after it ends. Losing Medicaid or CHIP gives you 90 days after the coverage ends.

Keep the termination notice; it shows the date the Marketplace will ask about. Voluntarily dropping coverage or losing it for not paying premiums generally does not count as losing coverage. Our lost Medicaid guide and COBRA vs Marketplace guide walk through those two situations.

Moving, marriage, a new baby

Moving. A move to a new ZIP code or county, or to the U.S. from another country or a U.S. territory, can qualify. For many moves you must have had qualifying coverage before the move, with some exceptions. A vacation or a move only for medical treatment does not qualify.

Marriage. Pick a plan by the last day of the month and coverage can start the first day of the next month. Generally at least one spouse must have had qualifying coverage before the wedding, with some exceptions.

Birth or adoption. Coverage can start the day of the birth or adoption, even if you enroll up to 60 days afterward. That matters for the hospital bills from the delivery. Our newborn guide explains the steps.

When coverage starts and how to activate it

The start date depends on the event and the day you pick a plan. After a birth or adoption it can go back to the event date; after a marriage it is the first of the month after you pick a plan. For a coverage loss, enrolling before the old plan ends is the best way to avoid a gap.

Coverage is not active until you finish plan selection, send any proof the Marketplace asks for and pay the insurer's first premium.

Job-based plans have their own rules. If you are joining an employer's plan instead of the Marketplace, the employer must give you at least 30 days to enroll after a qualifying event.

Can I cancel my health insurance at any time?

You can request to end Marketplace coverage, but cancellation does not automatically let you enroll again. Coordinate with the start of an employer plan, Medicare or other replacement. If only one household member is leaving, update that person rather than ending everyone's plan. Confirm the requested end date with the Marketplace.

Proof the Marketplace may ask for

The Marketplace may request documents proving the event or other eligibility details. Examples include an employer coverage-end letter, marriage record, birth record or address evidence. Follow the document list and due date in your notice, keep submission confirmation and avoid sending sensitive documents through public messages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cancel health insurance at any time?

Yes, you can ask to end Marketplace coverage at any time, but confirm the end date and your replacement first. Canceling does not create a Special Enrollment Period, so you may not be able to enroll again until Open Enrollment.

What is a qualifying life event?

It is a change that lets you enroll outside Open Enrollment, such as losing qualifying coverage, getting married, having or adopting a baby, or a qualifying move. Each event has its own conditions and deadline, usually 60 days.

How long do I have after losing coverage?

Usually 60 days after the coverage ends, and you can also enroll up to 60 days before it ends. If you lost Medicaid or CHIP, you have 90 days after it ends. Your termination notice shows the date that counts.

Can I change plans outside Open Enrollment?

Only with a qualifying life event or another Special Enrollment Period. Even then, your plan choices can be limited depending on the event, so check what the eligibility notice allows.

Does moving to Florida qualify me?

It can. A permanent move to Florida from another state, or to the U.S. from abroad or a U.S. territory, may qualify, and you usually have 60 days after the move. For many moves you must have had qualifying coverage before moving, with some exceptions.

When does SEP coverage start?

It depends on the event. After a birth or adoption, coverage can start the day of the event; after a marriage, it can start the first day of the month after you pick a plan. For other events, the start date depends on when you pick a plan.

Do I need proof for a special enrollment?

Often, yes. The Marketplace may ask for a letter showing when coverage ended, a marriage or birth record, or proof of your new address. Send exactly what the notice asks for by its deadline and keep the upload confirmation.

Can I enroll if I missed the deadline?

Usually not until Open Enrollment, unless another qualifying event applies or the Marketplace accepts an exceptional circumstance. Contact the Marketplace promptly and keep records that explain why you missed the deadline.
