General liability insurance can be an important part of a Florida business’s coverage program when customers, landlords, vendors, or contracts create third-party liability exposure. Covered by Guzman helps contractors and service businesses prepare the application, review requested limits and endorsements, and compare available options.

Call or text 813-302-7151, or send a request anytime. We review what you send and follow up, typically within one business day. The insurer decides eligibility and price after underwriting.

What general liability may cover

Depending on the policy’s terms, exclusions and limits, general liability commonly responds to claims involving:

  • Third-party bodily injury
  • Damage to property belonging to others
  • Certain personal and advertising injury allegations
  • Products and completed-operations claims when included and applicable
  • Legal defense and covered settlements or judgments

Two everyday Florida examples of the claims general liability is meant for: a painter’s ladder cracks a customer’s tile floor, or a customer trips over a cord on a job site and gets hurt.

The policy does not cover every business loss. The business’s own vehicles, employee injuries, professional errors, cyber events, owned property, tools, pollution, employment practices, and contractual obligations may require other policies or endorsements.

Who should consider general liability?

Many contractors and service businesses review general liability because they work at customer locations, use tools or equipment, interact with the public, lease space, hire subcontractors, or enter contracts that require proof of coverage.

Examples include plumbers, HVAC contractors, electricians, landscapers, cleaners, painters, pest-control businesses, fence and gutter installers, pool-service businesses, general contractors, and other Florida service companies.

Not every business is legally required to carry general liability. The need may come from the business’s exposure, a lease, a customer, a vendor, a licensing arrangement, or a contract.

What affects a general liability quote?

Carriers may consider:

  • Exact business operations and services
  • Gross revenue and projected revenue
  • Payroll, employee duties, and number of employees
  • Subcontractor work, cost, and insurance documentation
  • Years in business and relevant experience
  • Location and territory
  • Prior insurance and loss history
  • Requested limits and deductibles
  • Completed-operations exposure
  • Additional-insured and contract requirements
  • Tools, products, materials, and work performed away from the premises

Describe every operation accurately. Vague, incomplete, or inflated service lists can lead to incorrect classifications, underwriting delays, premium changes, audit problems, or claim disputes.

What general liability costs in Florida

In real quotes our agency has run for Florida businesses, general liability has ranged from $300 to $6,500 a year (about $25 to $550 a month). By type of business, the annual ranges look like this:

  • Contractors and trades: $500 to $9,000
  • General contractors and remodelers: $500 to $23,000
  • Handyman: $600 to $3,000
  • Concrete and masonry: $600 to $8,500
  • Landscaping, lawn and tree: $300 to $5,000
  • Cleaning and janitorial: $300 to $5,500
  • Restaurants: $300 to $8,500
  • Retail: $300 to $3,500
  • Auto repair shops and dealers: $600 to $7,000

Each business type is a separate group of quotes, so some of these go higher than the overall range. Your real price depends on the work you do, your revenue and payroll, the limits you pick and your claims history. See all the numbers in our Florida commercial insurance cost guide.

Commonly requested limits

A $1 million per-occurrence and $2 million general aggregate structure is commonly requested in many contracts and markets. It is not automatically the correct limit for every business, and it should not be assumed to cost the same as lower limits.

Send the complete contract requirements so the team can review the requested limits, aggregates, project-specific wording, and endorsements with the available options.

Completed operations and work after the job is finished

Some claims appear after a contractor or service business has completed the work. The policy’s products-completed operations provisions, exclusions, classification, and endorsements can affect whether and how a claim is addressed.

Businesses performing installation, repair, construction, maintenance, or other work that may cause damage after completion should discuss the exposure before binding. Do not assume every policy handles completed operations in the same way.

Additional insureds, waivers, and certificates

Customers, landlords, general contractors, and vendors may ask for:

  • A certificate of insurance
  • Additional-insured status
  • A waiver of subrogation
  • Primary and noncontributory wording
  • Completed-operations status
  • Specific limits or aggregates
  • Specific notice, wording, or project details

A certificate is evidence of existing coverage and does not create an endorsement. The requested provision must be supported by the policy and carrier. Send the complete legal name, address, relationship, contract language, and deadline as early as possible. See our guides on certificates of insurance and contract requirements and certificate holder vs. additional insured.

Employees, subcontractors, and classification accuracy

The way workers are paid does not by itself determine their legal or insurance status. Employee duties and subcontractor operations should be described accurately, and available certificates or exemptions should be collected when relevant.

Do not use a workers’ compensation exemption or a 1099 form as proof that every liability exposure has been transferred. Contracts, state law, policy language, and the actual working relationship may all matter.

General liability works with other commercial coverage

General liability does not replace:

  • Commercial auto for vehicles used in business
  • Workers’ compensation for eligible employee injuries
  • Commercial property for buildings, contents, or inventory
  • Inland marine or tools and equipment coverage
  • Professional liability for covered professional errors
  • Pollution coverage when the operation creates that exposure
  • Commercial umbrella or excess liability for eligible higher-limit needs

Our commercial insurance page explains how these coverages can be reviewed together.

New businesses and difficult accounts

New ventures and businesses without prior insurance can request a review. Businesses with cancellations, nonrenewals, denials, lapses, or losses should explain what happened and provide any available documentation. We can search the markets available to us, but the insurer decides whether to accept the business.

What information should you send?

Prepare:

  • Legal business name and active registration
  • Owner and contact information
  • Detailed operations and service list
  • Revenue and payroll
  • Employees and subcontractors
  • Prior coverage and loss runs when available
  • Requested limits and effective date
  • Customer, landlord, or vendor requirements
  • Locations, territories, and work performed away from the premises
  • Any cancellation, nonrenewal, or coverage concern

Protecting the business owner outside the business

Covered by Guzman can also help eligible business owners review homeowners and personal auto insurance. This is a separate personal-insurance conversation and does not change the terms of the commercial liability policy. Ask about home and personal auto options.

Is general liability required for every Florida business?

No. Not every Florida business is legally required to carry general liability. In practice, the need usually comes from a customer, a landlord, a general contractor or a contract that asks for proof of coverage. Some licensed trades also have insurance rules tied to their license, so check with your licensing board.

What does general liability usually not cover?

It does not cover your business vehicles, injuries to your own employees, your own tools or building, professional mistakes, cyber events or pollution. Those need commercial auto, workers’ comp, property, professional liability or other policies and endorsements.

Can general liability be purchased without commercial auto?

Yes. You can buy general liability on its own, without commercial auto, when a carrier accepts your business. General liability does not cover vehicles, so if you drive for work you will likely need both.

Can a new business obtain general liability insurance?

Yes, a new business can apply. Carriers will ask about your experience in the trade, and the down payment, terms and price depend on the work you do and the carrier.

Can a certificate be issued before the policy starts?

No. A certificate should only reflect active coverage. Special endorsements must also be supported by the policy and carrier.

Does the cheapest quote provide the same protection?

Not necessarily. Compare limits, exclusions, classifications, deductibles, endorsements, completed operations, and contract requirements, not only premium.

Can Covered by Guzman help with homeowners and personal auto too?

Yes. Eligible business owners may also ask the agency to review homeowners and personal auto coverage. Those policies remain separate from the commercial liability policy.

Can I contact the agency after normal carrier hours?

Yes. Call or text 813-302-7151 Monday through Saturday, 9am to 9pm, or send the form anytime. Binding, changes and certificates still depend on the insurance company’s processing times.
