Heavy trucks and show rigs in Gibtown

Gibsonton, or Gibtown to a lot of locals, runs on big vehicles. Dump trucks, tractor-trailers, tow trucks and car haulers work out of yards along U.S. 41, and the town’s carnival history lives on at the showmen’s club on Riverview Drive. For many of these businesses, commercial auto is the biggest insurance bill of the year.

We are an independent agency based in Wesley Chapel. We shop heavy truck policies with the insurance companies that write them and explain each quote in plain words.

From Port Redwing to I-75

Port Redwing, the Port Tampa Bay terminal in Gibsonton, handles bulk cargo such as limestone, granite and gypsum for Florida construction. That keeps dump trucks busy on short runs between the port, aggregate yards and job sites around Tampa Bay. Other trucks get on I-75 at Gibsonton Drive or Big Bend Road and head across the state.

Your price depends on those miles. We ask for your usual radius, your longest regular trip, where each truck parks at night and whether you haul your own material or other people’s for pay. See our pages on dump trucks and car haulers.

Let the contract set the limit

Brokers, shippers and site owners usually set a minimum liability limit before they will load you. Pick a limit that meets the strictest contract you sign. For deductibles, think about what each truck is worth and how long you could pay the bills with it parked in the shop.

Cargo is a separate decision. The auto policy pays for damage you do to others, while damage to the load itself usually needs motor truck cargo coverage. If you pull trailers that belong to someone else, tell us, because that usually has to be added separately.

Hauling rides and concession trailers

Every February, the International Independent Showmen’s Association holds its trade show at its club in Gibsonton, with more than 300 vendor booths selling rides, concession trailers and supplies. If you buy a trailer there, or tow rides from fair to fair, every truck, tractor and trailer needs to be on the policy. The rides and concession equipment are usually insured separately from the auto policy.

Not every insurance company writes show hauling or long-haul trucks, so those rigs sometimes end up on their own policy.

Trucks parked in a yard overnight

If your trucks sleep in a yard off U.S. 41 or behind your house, tell us the address, whether the lot is fenced and lit, and what stays in the trucks overnight. Theft or vandalism of the truck itself usually falls under comprehensive coverage. Tools, parts and equipment usually need their own coverage.

Proof of insurance for brokers and sites

Brokers and aggregate sites often want a certificate on file before your first load, sometimes with their name added to your policy. A certificate can only show what your policy already includes. If the contract asks for more, we check with the insurance company first, and it may ask for more information or premium. Read the contract before you sign it, not after the first load.

Weight rules and federal filings

Florida sets higher liability minimums for heavier commercial trucks. Under Florida Statutes s. 627.7415, you need at least $50,000 of liability coverage for a truck of 26,000 to under 35,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, at least $100,000 for 35,000 to under 44,000 pounds, and at least $300,000 for 44,000 pounds and up (bodily injury and property damage combined, per accident). Many tandem dump trucks and tractor-trailer rigs weigh 44,000 pounds or more.

Interstate for-hire carriers may also need a USDOT number, operating authority and insurance filings. Our trucking insurance and FMCSA filings guide walks through it.

Serving Gibsonton and nearby communities

We also help trucking and service businesses in Riverview, Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Brandon and Tampa. Call or text 813-302-7151 with your truck and trailer list, your drivers and any broker contracts, and we will start shopping.

What businesses in Gibsonton pay for insurance

These ranges come from real quotes our agency has run for Gibsonton businesses and, where noted, for businesses across Hillsborough County. Prices are annual and include taxes and fees. Commercial auto runs high here because many local accounts are trucking and hauling fleets. Your price can land outside these ranges, because vehicles, drivers, payroll and claims usually matter more than the ZIP code.

  • Commercial auto, whole policy$3,000 to $70,000 / yearAbout $250 to $5,850 a month.
  • General liability (Hillsborough County)$300 to $6,000 / yearAbout $25 to $500 a month.
  • Workers' compensation (Hillsborough County)$600 to $6,500 / yearAbout $50 to $550 a month.
  • Business owner's policy (Hillsborough County)$400 to $16,000 / yearAbout $30 to $1,350 a month.
  • Commercial property (Hillsborough County)$700 to $8,000 / yearAbout $55 to $670 a month.
  • Professional liability (Hillsborough County)$200 to $2,500 / yearAbout $15 to $210 a month.

For ranges by coverage, vehicle and business type, see our Florida commercial insurance cost guide. For your real number, call or text 813-302-7151. Commercial property and business owner's policies in Florida usually carry a separate hurricane deductible that is not reflected in these prices.

Does commercial auto cover the cargo I haul?

Not by itself. Damage to the freight or material on your truck is usually covered by a separate motor truck cargo policy, with its own limits and exclusions. Many brokers ask for both.

I haul carnival rides to fairs. What insurance does my rig need?

Every truck and tractor needs commercial auto, with each trailer listed on the policy. The rides and concession equipment are usually insured on a separate policy. If you travel to fairs in other states, federal USDOT rules may also apply, depending on the weight and use.

Do I need a USDOT number?

You do if your truck, or truck and trailer together, is rated at 10,001 pounds or more and you cross state lines for business. Some states also require one for trucks that never leave the state, so check your exact case on the FMCSA USDOT number page. For-hire interstate carriers usually need operating authority too.

Can one policy cover my dump truck and my tow truck?

Sometimes. Mixed fleets can share a policy, but some insurance companies write towing or long-haul trucks only on a separate policy. Each quote should show exactly which vehicles and uses are included.

What do I need to send for a trucking quote?

Send your truck and trailer list with VINs, each driver’s license number and date of birth, your usual radius and what you haul. Loss runs, the claims report from your current insurance company, help a lot. Add any broker or site contract so we can match its limits.
