Your 1095-A is the form that connects your Marketplace health plan to your federal tax return. It is not a bill, and by itself it does not tell you whether you owe tax. Before you hand it to your tax preparer, check that it lists the right people, the right coverage year and the right months.

What Form 1095-A shows

Part III has three columns for each month: the premium for your plan, the premium for a benchmark silver plan, and the advance premium tax credit paid to your insurer. The benchmark is only used to figure your tax credit; it is usually not the plan you bought. The premium column is the full monthly price, so it can be higher than what you actually paid after the credit. Read the column labels before assuming a number is wrong.

When it arrives and how to download it

HealthCare.gov says you should get Form 1095-A in the mail by mid-February, and it may be in your Marketplace account as early as mid-January. You do not have to wait for the mail:

  • Log in to your HealthCare.gov account.
  • Select the application for the coverage year you are filing for (for example, your 2025 application for a 2025 tax return), not the current year’s application.
  • Select “Tax forms” from the menu.
  • Under “Your Form 1095-A,” select “Download PDF.”

Picking the wrong year’s application is the most common reason people cannot find the form. If you are locked out of your account, use HealthCare.gov’s account recovery or call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 instead of creating a new application.

How it connects to Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit)

Your preparer copies the numbers from the 1095-A onto Form 8962. That form compares the tax credit you qualify for, based on your final income, with the advance credit paid to your insurer during the year. If you got less than you qualified for, your refund can go up. If you got more, you may have to pay some or all of it back. Tell your preparer about any household changes during the year, and give them every 1095-A you received, not just the first one.

What if my 1095-A is wrong or missing?

If the people, months or plan on the form are wrong, or the form never came, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596. If only the benchmark silver premium looks wrong, HealthCare.gov’s tax tool can give you the correct amount. If you get a form marked “Corrected,” use it instead of the earlier one, and never use a voided form. If you already filed, ask a tax professional whether you need an amended return.

1095-A vs 1095-B vs 1095-C

The 1095-A is only for Marketplace coverage, and it is the one you need to settle your premium tax credit. A 1095-B usually comes from an insurance company or a government program like Medicaid, and a 1095-C comes from a larger employer. Those two do not replace the 1095-A. Give your preparer every form you received and let them decide what goes on the return.

Need help finding and understanding your form?

We can help you find your 1095-A in your Marketplace account and explain what each part means, with your permission where it is needed. We do not issue the form, prepare your tax return or decide what you owe the IRS. If the form shows coverage you never signed up for, report it to the Marketplace right away and keep copies of everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to report a 1095-A on my taxes?

Usually, yes. If advance premium tax credits were paid for your plan, you must use the numbers from your 1095-A to fill out Form 8962 on your federal return. You also use it if you want to claim the credit at tax time. Your preparer can confirm what your return needs.

How do I get my 1095-A form?

Log in to HealthCare.gov, select the application for that coverage year, choose “Tax forms” and download the PDF. A paper copy should also arrive in the mail by mid-February.

How does a 1095-A affect my tax refund?

It can raise or lower your refund. If the advance credit paid during the year was less than you qualify for, your refund can go up; if it was more, you may have to pay back the difference.

What happens if I don’t include my 1095-A?

Your return can be delayed, and not settling the advance credit can affect whether you get that help for future coverage. If you get a notice from the IRS or the Marketplace, answer it by the date it gives.

Do I have to file taxes if I have Marketplace insurance?

Yes, if advance premium tax credits were paid for your plan. You generally must file a federal return with Form 8962, even if your income is low enough that you would not otherwise file.

What if I got two 1095-A forms?

Use all of them. Two forms usually mean you had more than one plan or your household changed during the year. If one is marked “Corrected,” use it instead of the older one, and do not use a voided form.

Does my agent send my 1095-A?

No. The Marketplace issues the 1095-A. As your agent, we can help you download it from your account.

Can I file my taxes without my 1095-A?

You should not file without it if you had Marketplace coverage with advance credits. Wait for the correct form, and ask your preparer about an extension if the filing deadline is close.
