If your Medicare Advantage plan sends a letter saying it will not renew, the plan is ending your local coverage, and you need to decide how you will receive medical and prescription benefits next.

Keep the entire letter. Its termination date and enrollment instructions matter more than a headline saying an insurer is leaving Florida.

How you’ll know: the plan non-renewal letter

The non-renewal notice identifies the affected plan, the last day of coverage and your next steps. A company can discontinue one contract or county offering while keeping others. Match the notice to your plan identification, not just the company's name. If the letter is missing, request another copy from the plan and confirm the end date.

Your Special Enrollment Period

A plan ending gives you a Special Enrollment Period on top of the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7). How long it lasts depends on why the plan is ending:

  • Plan not renewing its contract with Medicare: you can switch to another plan between December 8 and the last day of February of the following year.
  • Plan ending its contract with Medicare: your window starts 2 months before the contract ends and ends 1 full month after.
  • Medicare ending the plan’s contract: your window starts 1 month before the contract ends and ends 2 full months after.

Keep the letter as proof that you lost coverage through no choice of your own. It can also matter for other rights, such as buying a Medigap policy.

Option 1: another Medicare Advantage plan

A replacement Medicare Advantage plan must serve your address and accept enrollment under the applicable period. Compare your specialists, hospital, prescriptions, pharmacy and recurring treatments again. An insurer's suggested replacement is not automatically equivalent. Check whether an existing authorization needs to be transferred or reviewed and how ongoing care will continue on the effective date.

Option 2: Original Medicare and Part D

Original Medicare is another way to receive Part A and Part B services. Prescription coverage usually needs separate attention through Part D. Original Medicare alone does not have a general annual out-of-pocket limit.

A non-renewal may also create time-limited Medigap rights. Covered by Guzman does not sell Medigap. Contact Medicare or Florida SHINE promptly for an explanation of those rights; this is a referral, not a supplement recommendation.

Review your doctors and prescriptions

Make two lists: providers you want to keep and medications you actively take. Verify each provider's location and each drug's strength, quantity and pharmacy. A replacement plan can cover the same condition differently. If treatment is underway, ask the new plan about continuity of care before the old plan ends. Keep confirmation numbers and copies of written answers.

Call us before December 7

Send us the non-renewal notice and ask for a review before December 7 when possible. That leaves time to compare plans for January coverage. If that date has passed, contact us anyway so we can check your Special Enrollment Period. Don’t assume a January appointment will be billed under your old plan. Confirm the new enrollment and start date directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan leaves my area?

Your coverage under that plan ends on the date in the notice. You can review another Advantage plan or Original Medicare and prescription coverage.

Do I get a special enrollment period?

Yes, in most cases. If your plan is not renewing, you can switch between December 8 and the last day of February; other plan endings have different windows.

Can I buy Medigap without health questions?

Maybe. A plan leaving your area can give you a time-limited right to buy certain Medigap policies without health questions. Ask Medicare or Florida SHINE right away about the deadlines; we do not sell Medigap.

Will I lose my doctor?

Not necessarily. Verify the doctor under each replacement option. Participation in the old plan does not establish participation in the new one.

What if I do nothing?

You may be returned to Original Medicare when your plan ends and be left without the drug coverage you expected. Read the notice and choose new coverage before the end date.
